Palm Oil and Why We Don't Use it

Palm oil can be found in anything from shampoo to donuts. Now, palm oil is the most common vegetable oil in the world. So common that it can be found in half of all supermarket products. In the world of soap makers, palm oil is used quite often. In our years of soapmaking, we have to admit….we’ve used it! The benefits are numerous, including being high in vitamin A and vitamin E. It also, makes for a hard, long lasting bar of soap and to be honest: it’s cheap!
Countless hours have been spent in the Love Life Soap studio coming up with hard oils to replace palm, that would have the same or better benefits to your skin. Now we use shea butter and cocoa butter. Shea Butter is a skin superfood: naturally rich in A,E, and F vitamins. It provides the skin with essential fatty acids necessary for collagen production. Cocoa Butter is high in Vitamins E,K and F. Both of these oils have proven to benefit the skin more than palm oil. So, what did it mean for soap and other products we make? We have seen nothing but great results in our products themselves. It was a definite upgrade in quality. The only pitfall we could say is the price. But in the end we felt this increase was nothing compare to the benefits of our health and ecosystem as a whole.

Things you might not know about Palm Oil and why we have chosen not to use it in our products: Malaysia is the largest exporter of palm oil today. Large portions of tropical forest are being cleared to make room for vast monoculture palm oil plantations. Because of this, the plantations are destroying habitats for many endangered species, tigers, rhinos, elephants and orangutans. In 1990 around 315,000 orangutans existed and today, fewer than 50,000 are still in captivity. So, many things in our ecosystem are being compromised in palm production. Land erosion, plant diversity and global warming are things to consider. After seeing pictures and reading article after article on this subject, We could not be a part of this type of destruction. We here at Love Life Soap want to create a positive impact, not only to your skin and well being but also for our environment.
